Lodge Lecture

Our lecture this week featured Komilla Sutton. Komilla is chair and co-founder of the British Association of Vedic Astrology. She is also on the Board of the American Council of Vedic Astrologers.

The Lunar Nodes#Komilla explained how everything in Vedic Astrology evolves around time and the cycles of the Moon. She pointed out the how the lunar cycle covers 29 days of waxing and waning and how each period takes 13 degrees 20 minutes. They all have names and are known as the Nakshatras. They commence at 0 degrees of Aires and go through the Zodiac. Planets placed in the degree of the Nakshatra it is in takes on the energy of that Nakshatra. Then there are the planetary periods, known as the Dashas. There are many Dasha systems in Vedic Astrology, but the most common one was the Vimshottari Dasha system, which we looked at tonight. They are extremely accurate as a system of prediction.

Essentials of Vedic Astrology

Originating in the era when the Vedas were written, the system assumes a 120 year life span! Those 120 years are divided up into various phases, controlled by the nine planets (the outer planets were not discovered in those ancient times) Whilst the birth chart suggests the passive influences you have brought with you from your past lives, and the karmic issues that form part of your character, it is the Dasha system that indicates when these issues will become prominent. In other words there will be times when things will run smoothly and other times that will prove troublesome. The Dasha pattern will be ruling at particular times in your life. They will act according to their own energy, their roles as rulers of the houses and their role as significator.

Specific periods are the Sun - 6 years, the Moon - 10 years, Mars - 7 years, Rahu (North Node) - 18 years, Jupiter - 16 Years, Saturn - 19 years, Mercury - 17 years, Ketu (South Node) - 7 years, and Venus - 20 years. The first Dasha period is decided by the position and degree of your Natal Moon.

Komilla put up the charts of David Blunkett and Julia Roberts in order that we could chart what would be happening for them through the Dashas

In my own case, having studied this system of Astrology, I found the Dashas to be 100% accurate thorough all the periods of my life so far. A very interesting evening. Thank you Komilla.

Charts Discussion

We were able just to tag on to the last fifteen minutes of our evening with a couple of charts for fun with Gill.
